I'd say you can't really compare them. Like Mario said: Wax is more for stuff like keying and masking. You wouldn't do that with Virtualdub.

As for me, I'm using VD and I'm really content with it. I don't only render the pictures to an animated sequence (as I am working with a Canon EOS which is not connected to a PC whilst shooting), but do several effects. There are a lot of filters out in the internet that can be downloaded for free, for all kinds of options. Not only stuff like a deshaker, deflicker etc. filter; but I do also zooms, pans, color correction and a shaky-cam-effect with it. Moreover, the program can handle very high picture quality.

I would really recommend you trying out these programmes, so you can judge by yourself which one you think you can need and which not.

Wax has more features and better effects, but is rather unstable and crashes often. VDub is more limited, but reliable.

If you're into it, shell out the cash for a good editor like Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere. Trust me, its worth every penny.

Was the answer with "wondering" wrong?
What would like to be the right one?

Why are you wondering what "other" are saying about this and that software?
Just use the software which is better for YOU.
Because YOU have to work with it.

WAX ist a tool similar to AfterEffects. Masking and keying is best done with this tool.
VitualDub is also able to edit your film, but there are other/easyer programs for editing clips as with VD.
VirtualDub hal also some effects, and there are some effects for download, but its a bit harder to work with.
For LightFlicker or shaky/bumpy shots VD is best used in brickfilms.
The free-version of Magix Moviemaker is one of this.
