Brick Block, thanks for the useful link.  I might try some of those techniques.

I did the effect using GIMP.  I have this neat tablet-laptop thingy that comes with a pen you can draw on the screen with, which I used to write the words out.  Then I imported the picture with the words into GIMP and erased the text bit by bit (using a blank version as a background plate), saving each version separately. Once the words were gone, I played the imported the frames into an editing program and played it backwards.]]></description>

This tutorial explains it pretty well. Basically, if you have a whiteboard you can use it for titles. Even a piece of paper can work. Just take a picture of it and overlay it onto your footage in an editing software. Hope this helps. Just another option in case you want to try it.]]></description>
