I'm going to add something to what Pritchard said.
First, set the project settings to 16:9.
Then, click the little symbol in the bottom right of the video that brings up the cropping menu.
Click the "Lock Aspect Ratio" button on the left of the crop window. Right click on the video, and click "Match Output Aspect". That will change the video to 16:9 (if you project settings are 16:9). This way, you don't have to eyeball the scale of everything, it will be exactly 19:9.

I always crop my footage. It really doesn't take that long. However, I do wish there was a way to mass crop every clip.

No, there's no way to just do a straight crop across the board.
But like OldScratch said, you want to crop each frame by itself to get the best framing.
And even then, it doesn't take that long...*

And you don't want to export and crop that, remember that every time you export/render something, it may loose just a tiny bit of quality. Plus then you have to chop that up into tiny pieces to edit.

*Remember, this is stop-motion that you're into. Nothing goes quickly, and everything needs to be hand-done or else it'll look bad.

Is there a better way than using the cropping menu? I'd have to do it for every clip in the video (I guess I could export and then chop that, but I was hoping for a way to do it along with the rest of my editing).

First, set the project settings to 16:9.
Then, click the little symbol in the bottom right of the video that brings up the cropping menu.
Lock the aspect ratio to something 16:9, then resize the cropping selection to show as much of the video as possible without getting any black lines.

Does that help?
If not, I'll add more details later.

What is the best way to crop video in Sony Vegas, specifically to 16:9 or some other similar aspect ratio? I've heard something about a cookie cutter, but I can't find it or sufficient information about it.

Thanks!
