I agree with jampot. Nothing constructive has been contributed to the discussion for the last page or so and several contributors have repeatedly veered off topic and have stooped to petty insults.

I consider this topic concluded.

Please try harder next time at keeping the discussion on topic, and please be civil to each other.

There will be new discussion topic Monday.

Larry Simmons, I normally do ignore the comments that persoanlly attack my beliefs, no prob there. I am not offended or looking to be offended. I don't offend so easily. In fact, I take solace at such attacks, because Jesus said, ""Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven". And no one is saying anyone shouldn't be able to make a certain type of film. BUT, here in BiM, we do have rules on mutual respect for each other, which is also good advice for life. I've broken the rules sometimes here, inadvertantly, and been advised by an admin or another user, to which I publicly apologize and move on. Their comments to me weren't whining, and trying to keep things respectful here on BiM isn't whining. I totally agree with Jampot and If I were a minifig, for the above reasons.

Now to get back on topic: We have and all should have the freedom to use the medium of Lego to express the art we wish. If we start saying to someone, "you shouldn't use Lego to express this or that," then how long before the time comes when YOUR idea is deemed to be inappropriate? Freedom of expression really doens't mean anything for popular or easy ideas. Anyone can say, sure that idea should be protected" when it's one everyone accepts. It's the ones that challenge conventional wisdom that need to be protected, and call for all ideas to be allowed to be expressed.

I agree with Jampot we should head back to the discussion at hand (if there is even anything left to be said).
As much as I enjoy debating comparitive philosophy, my experience tells me that the interwebs "just ain't the place fo' that." It gets to easily out of hand, and eventually boils down to name calling. It's too bad, but it's the nature of the beast.

I think if you wanna badmouth God then do so. If you want to glorify him/her do so as well. We are all free and we can choose in what we believe in. If you see someone post an offensive comment (religion-wise and etc) to you... ignore it. Because some dude on the internet said something bad about God doesn't mean you have to pick on him or start whining how he shouldn't talk like that. Everyone is just so sensitive nowadays... "oh you insulted my beliefs" oh come on if you're so weak that some guy insults your faith or whatever just by writing some bs on the internet then you should probably see a psychiatrist or something. I'm not talking about this exact situation guys, this is just common sense.

So the answer is not to stereotype Christians or other monotheists, just as I would be foolish to stereotype atheists for all the damage they did in the Russian revolution or more personal incidents where atheists have harmed others int he name of their religious beliefs.

And if you read earlier, I am in total agreement that it's the parents responsibility in the end, although you still had a problem in yr previous post if the parents believed in God and were instilling those values.

I'm sorry you've taken offence, however the damage I've seen these beliefs do to me and many of those close it me is VERY real, and as someone who has studied the Bible for close to two decades I find that god's behavior reflects that of an abusive boyfriend. And if I feel that I need to create a brick film about that abusive boyfriend relationship that god has with his church as part of my recovery processes there is no reason I shouldn't be able to.

And it still goes back to parents need to parent there children, not the artists. If a kid reads my post and parents don't want to or can't have a dialog with there child about it maybe they need to seriously question their faith.

I really think that there are a lot of people putting responsibility on the artist that belongs with the parents of children. If kids are left to their own devices on the internet they can find some stuff that is much more harmful then seeing 'The LEGO Clan' or something. And if the kid is scarred by whatever they see (and kids are far more resilient then most people give them credit) and they can't talk to there parents about it that is not a problem with the artist, it's a problem with the child parent relationship. And just because some parents in the mid-west or bible-belt don't want the name of their abusive sky boyfriend that they have deitized taken in vain doesn't mean they don't have to explain that not everyone shares these views with their kids.

"Should brickfilms avoid certain topics such as explicit violence, mature language, and potentially offensive or disturbing themes because LEGO is primarily a children’s toy?"

LEGO bricks are the medium. Just because watercolors are many times a child's first experience with paint, doesn't mean that they are limited to use by children.

Alternately, are brickfilmers responsible for warning viewers about possible mature content in their brickfilms?

"Legally no, however should they? I believe that they should. This could be as simple as adding a line in the YT video description, warning that there is graphic violence and/or sexual content. Really, it all comes down to the creator's decision."

Hey, Nathan Wells, I scrolled back to reread some stuff and after posting again realized that you wanted the topic to be on Brickfilms and not sidetracked onto the MPAA. Sorry about that; so I'll bring it back. When I mentioned about how things can be misrated, the significance of that is that if a viewer is a parent concerned about the content their children watch, they should not just trust the rating itself, but review the content before the approve their children to see it. Brickfilms are self-rated which can produce misrated films (I've seen such) or non-rated brickfilms. Since people are free to produce the art of brickfilming however they wish, it's the parents' responsibility to guide their children. And a good parent is involved in the guidance of their children, however lenient or strict they consider adequete (so long as strict doesn't mean abusive!)

When I submit new films to BIM, on the self-imposed content ratings, I try to err on the side of caution, rating things slightly higher than I think. I rated Holding Our Own Episode 2 mild violence for a cartoony hit by a car scene and mild sexual content for a discussion of naked Baribe dolls and a character mentioning a naked person on a record cover ("In the yellow", she says).

(Also unhealthy eating kills but you can do that in kid-friendly movies)
