I have never made a sci-fi or castle movie, I like it because it helps tone down on the one-color sets. Meaning that if you build an outside set and make it all grassy green, the green gets kinda overpowering. But throw in even just a bit of grey, and it tremendously helps to blend the colors; making it easier to look at without getting overpowered by green. Of course if you have some custom trees with brown trunks, that works as well. Or if your Squid, throw in everything and it looks great.

I build mostly outdoor sets, so grey works. But when I build a town, a house, or an inside of a building were grey is the prominent color, then tone down the grey with something else, like tan or brown.

So grey is my favorite color mainly because it adds that realistic feel and look. ;)

Backyard Legos, The brown is "reddish brown" according to Lego Digital Designer, and the unofficial name for it on http://Bricklink.com. he earlier brown was more a straight up brown without the additional red. I've got some parts from that era.

The Maersk Blue has a bit of yellow in it it seems, compared to medium blue.

Dark or light grey.
75 percent of the sets I build use plenty of gray colors. If you use it right, you can get a sweet looking set with realistic color. So even when doing landscape sets such as a forest, I put some rocks or dirt in just so that your eyes don't get an overload of one solid color.

If you watch a movie and you would be surprised that almost no scene is completely void of grey.

I also like dark green. If mixed correctly with normal green it can make for a more realistic mood.

Mine is dark grey.
I find myself building stuff in dark grey more than any other colour. My Batman sets usually involve every building being totally dark grey, my outside sets have loads of dark grey rocks, and other sets I build are also have a lot of dark grey.

Grey is generally my favourite colour. It's an odd choice, most people think grey is boring and dull, but I love it. Mostly because of the way it helps present other colours. More saturated stuff tends to look better next to grey, as the grey helps bring it out better. Its good for depressing moods, and even in a bright colourful set, you can have some grey to let your eyes rest a bit.

As a brickfilmer I love brown, I think the official color is red brown (I'm pretty sure just plain brown was a color from the early 2000's and back, which they no longer use). I find it very useful for the kind of sets that I build, especially Victorian era offices, of which I've built two. My favorite actual color of brick though has got to be either medium blue or earth blue, like HoldingOurOwn said, their just so pleasant.

MAERSK blue is different from snad blue. I was told by TLG that Maersk licensed Lego with authorization only to use that color in Maersk sets. Sand blue is the blue from the pet shop modular set. MY favorite color is medium blue, the color of the Creator seaside house with the palm tree (http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Seaside-House-7346), or the doors int he Mountain hut from creator. I like the color because it's pleasant.

My least favorite color is gray.

OK, that's a bit of a massive exaggeration.

Doing a quick search it appears the "proper" name for it is Sand Blue. I always thought of it as Maersk Blue because it appears prominently in the Maersk themed sets.
