I personally really like the Adobe platform. Everything works perfectly together. You can take a Photoshop documents and import it into After Effects and turn it into a motion graphic. Final Cut Pro X has improved a lot since it first came out. It is a great mid range editing software. I would equate it to Sony Vegas. Simple to use but still has a lot of power. If I was you I would get CS6 Create Suite Student Edition. It comes with Premiere, After Effect and Photoshop. It will cost about $600 which is twice the price of FCPX. But After Effect and Photoshop are must have programs and I would say it is worth the extra money for them. Final Cut is being dropped as the "pro" editing software and Premiere is rapidly taking its place. So learning Premiere is a good skill to have. So I would say the bottom line is how much money you are willing to spend.

I'd actually advise you to somewhat disregard the video Legocloniac linked, as the situation with Final Cut Pro X has changed considerably since the video was made (two years ago). In the present, FCPX has regained the majority of the features it lacked at launch and furthermore is proving to be an incredible piece of software.

I'd recommend Final Cut over Adobe Premiere Pro for a number of reasons, namely that it has been built from the ground up for OS X and also due to the fact that Adobe is radically, and arguably for the worse, changing its suites and your method of payment. The Creative Suite strategy is no more, replaced by the Creative Cloud, a monthly subscription plan where you rent your desired software and never fully own it. I personally think owning your software outright is a far better option.

I think it’s time I get a better editing software. I’ve been using iMovie ever since I got my Mac, so it’s been a good 3 years or so. iMovie just can’t handle anything anymore it’s so bogged down. I have all of my footage and projects saved to an external hard drive, but it’s still too much. It can’t add any sound or even just drag and drop clips into the timeline without freaking out and getting a bad lag or just crashing.

So I’d like to know, what editing software do you guys recommend? I’ve got a birthday coming up fairly soon and I have some money I’ve been saving for such a time so I thought I should ask about this now. First, I am on a Mac. Second, I really don’t know much about what editing software is out there or about the price ranges, it’s been a while since I’ve looked at any.

So please, let me know what you use or recommend and I’ll take a look at it. I can’t use iMovie much longer, it’s really poopy these days.

Thanks for the help!
