A great place to go is the Pick-a-Brick wall in LEGO Stores and fill up a large cup (or several). I went to one recently and got loads of bricks including 113 light grey 1x4s for only £11; in total I reckon I payed less for these bricks than I would have on Bricklink. The key thing is having a method to use as little space up as possible when filling it--you can fit a lot in if you pack efficiently and don't just randomly dump in loose bricks.

Also, as a bonus, you can fit in tiles or other small bricks by sliding them in the gaps between the larger bricks.
