Thanks for the feedback guys!
After thinking it over, some new gear, and more Lego sound a little more appealing for now.

I am looking at Hitfilm, but it's only about a $120 less than the whole Adobe package, so it really wouldn't save me that much compared to all the other things that I'd be getting by going with Adobe. If I was stupid enough to not buy at Academic Super Store, then I'd go Hitfilm, as it starts out cheaper, but it really doesn't have much of a discount compared to AAE, and doesn't include all the extra stuff.

The Wax program with plug-ins really wouldn't be able to do want I'm wanting would it? It seems more like a video editor, not an effect program. I've already got Sony Vegas 11, so I only need the advanced effect stuff.

Plus, I don't really do that much effect work, granted I probably would if I had AAE, but if I've survived just fine this long, I think I can keep going for a while. On the flip side, if I had AAE, I could make a sci-fi movie that I have a script for, but that I'm kinda avoiding right now because I can't do the effect work that it would need.

So in the end I'll probably not get either one right now, but thanks for all the help!

Here is a website(www.academicsuperstore.com) that sells Adobe software. I've never been to it but my uncle used it to buy Adobe InDesign academic version since Adobe doesn't sell it now(they used to sell the academic version). I believe it's a perfectly secure website. Hope that helps, but I don't know if they sell After Effects.

A fellow homeschooler? Awesome!

Anyway, back to subject; Is after effects worth it? Yes. Although I've never used it my self, I've seen cool things done with it, and you're getting it for a bargain(I usually see it for around $1000).
A cheaper alternative? FXHome's Hitfilm looks pretty neat. And if my two cents isn't too late to pitch in, I would check that out. :)

Thanks for the great responses!

Unless I'm masking, I always render the pictures from MJ and work with the video file. While it is possible to do just about anything with Photoshop/Gimp, I would rather work with a video clip. That's another reason I'm looking at AAF, because it would save a lot of time with the masking, and I wouldn't have to work frame-by-frame in Gimp anymore.

I don't plan on doing live-action, or even doing video work for a job, it's my [s]addiction[/s] hobby that I love.
Which is why I'm not to keen on spending the money.

For other gear: A better desk, a real mic, LEDs for lighting effects, possibly a C920, really, a lot of cheaper things that would add up fairly quickly.

And Lego really isn't that cheap, I could spend a small (or even a large) fortune on Bricklink and still not have all the bricks that I might need. Right now, most of my walls are white, because that's the only color that I have a lot of. I'd like to get a lot more Black, Dark and Light Bley for sets, but it costs money.

On the flip side, I can always sell the Lego and make at least most of my money back. And most of it will go up in price, so you could even consider it an investment. AAF is NOT like this, so while I don't think twice about buying huge amounts of Lego, once I get AFF, I can never return it or make the money back.

And I've triple-checked the website, I can't get the disks, not sure why, but I can't.

And getting the demo first is a given, I'd never spend that much on something unless I knew all about it.

After Effects Cs6 is awesome! The biggest thing I think think alot of us like is the masking options. Yup. Now it's a lot easier to mask regular stuff like jumping up and down. To the update thingy, I don't think you can upgrade with the student teacher edition. Correct me if I'm wrong. It also speeds up post production a lot, but most stuff can be done in gimp/photoshop. Now if you're doing live action action also, then this is worth it. Now if you're only doing stopmotion, and you have a lot of time on your hands, this may or may not be worth it. For sure, try the free trial first though. As for the gear, LEGO can be fairly easy to save up for if you get some smaller sets, but what gear do you think could make your stopmotions even better?

EDIT: Are you sure you can't get the disk edition?

Objection.

After effects has an "import sequence" option, which takes any folder of pictures and turns them into a video, of which you can easily control the frame rate, aspect ratio, and various other options.
If you want to do any sort of visual effects, this is the best value of anything on the market.

Aftereffects is an extremely advanced program, and you should really only spend the money if you want to spend a lot of time on post production and learning how to use the program. Also, Aftereffects is for videos, and really, stop motion is more single pictures than it is video clips (depending on capture program/camera). I know Photoshop can be purchased at a lesser price, and as a photographer I already had it, and can do similar effects as Aftereffects, because the animation starts out as single frames. I tend to avoid post production anyway, so I'm not planning on buying any new programs. If you do want Aftereffects and Premier, purchasing them both at the student price would probably be the same as buying the whole Production Pack, so you might as well get all the other stuff, because they can be very useful, especially Photoshop.

Opinion Stated.

So, I'm thinking about getting this.
But I'm not too keen on spending that much on some software that might be obsolete in a few years. So I have several questions:

#1. Is it even worth it? ($440 is a LOT of money.)
#2. Would this be the best use of my money? Or would more Lego and/or better equipment be a smarter choice? (If the latter, please specify.)
#3. How long would I be able to use this without paying for an upgrade or newer version?
#4. I'm really just wanting After Effects and Premiere Pro, is there a way to get those cheaper and avoid buying all this other stuff that I'll never use? (Also, just how much of this will I really need?)
#5. This is the disk version that, as a homeschooler, I can't qualify for. But I can get the download version. Is there a way to get the disks anyway? Or would I have to go the download version?

And if you have any advice that might help, please feel free to say it!

Thanks!

(I may not end up getting it anyway, I'm just looking into it at the moment.)
