How did I miss this originally?! Superb film. 5 stars definitely. A few moments had their drama undermined by some broad and semi-cartoony movements, but other than that, excellent! Overall, the story was superb, and easily made up for this. The compositing, effects, dialogue, and presentation were a real cinematic treat as well.

Closest thing to a Chris Nolan film in Lego. Feels like a spiritual successor to Unrenewable in a lot of ways.

I'll be sure to revisit this one again and again! :D

My favourite part of that film was actually the credits at the start. I just loved how the lift gave way to the text. The highlight was when the prisoner walks through the line, which I think was really well executed, and symbolises many things. That was, for me, the most powerful scene in the film - where someone who has been exiled from society can be transferred back into it on whim, and then further more be expected conform. The figure becomes one of many again, and not an outcast. One of the main downfalls of this film was that it didn't explore that.

I felt that the main character, being once a prisoner, was an un-relatable character. His backstory should have been explored. I don't think you should have to feel for a bland character you now basically nothing about, including what earned him his place in prison. The people watching the happenings of the movie from the 'control room' made the plot a bit confusing, as it was not explained what their purpose, or allegiance was.

You obviously put a truckload of work into this film, and I'm sorry if I'm a bit over-critical, as I did enjoy watching it. The thing is, the are not many dialogue based brickfilms out there, and I think that people need to 'get used to' this less-popular form. With many prominent Brickfilmers making films/random clips, like Forrestfire101's 'Lego Captain America', many people expect an all-out, adventure, gun-flaring, action-packed video. The magnificent credits at the start lay in people's minds the perception that 'The Button' would be a spy-like, action film, which may have lead to some of the disappointed reactions I've seen in this forumpost. While this has been said, I didn't find the plot of 'The Button' particularly engaging, as I kept noticing the slow frame rate, okay (stagnant) animation, and not so interesting plot. The 15 minute time limit heavily impacted on this film, as I think a lot was covered in the given time. It would have been better if it was split into two longer parts. If you can further utilise your effect, animation and writing skills, you can make fantastic films. But with 'The Button', I found it to be a moderately good film, but with room for improvement in a few areas. I hope you continue to create great films!

Wow! That was amazing for a first film! While, as most have said, the animation is a little lackluster at points, it was still amazing with a great script and a great message about the choices we make in life. While most brickfilms are entertaining for a moment, but don't leave an impression, this film will certainly resonate with me long after I watched it. Great job and keep up the good work!

I know this film was released a while ago, but I only just saw it and felt like giving a review...

From start to finish, there is a clear sense of quality to the style and execution of the film. Visual effects are fantastic, particularly the opening titles, which really set the mood of the film. Lighting and cinematography are the film's strongest points, and really give the film a cinematic quality. However, like others have said before, the animation was choppy in places, particularly when characters are walking, but the clever use of cinematography and effects covered it up quite well and overall made the viewing experience enjoyable. For me, I felt the voice actors all did a fairly decent job although there was some notable noise and clipping on the actual, as well as variable sound levels which made it hard to understand what they were saying. As for the story, it took a while to grasp the concept and understand what was happening, a second or third viewing would probably be needed in order to fully understand it, but I still found it to be interesting and engaging nonetheless.

Overall, this is a fantastic brickfilm, with a refreshingly original concept. The choppy animation is redeemed by it's fantastic visuals and engaging story

Nope, not the AFF. I'm submitting it into this film festival actually (and possibly a couple others):

In-fact, I was just notified not but a couple days ago that it was a semi-finalist, so it looks like I'll be booking a flight to San Antonio. ;)

The layout of the fan poster is pretty good actually. You just need some higher quality images. ;p

Which film festival? Is it the one in Austin?

By the way, I made my own fan-made poster for "The Button". Tell me what you think, Phillip.

It's pretty impressive for a first brickfilm, but as an overall film it has a lot of flaws. A lot of the visual effects were done well, and the compositing was pretty realistic. I liked some of the face expressions, but at some parts it looked like the characters had shape-shifting blobs on their faces rather than mouths.

The cinematography was also pretty good throughout the film; I really liked the lighting at some parts. One thing that bothered me was the fact that the focus kept on changing between characters very suddenly. They got really blurry when they weren't talking, which was kind of distracting. Also, as some people have already pointed out, the dialogue and voice acting weren't the best, and the story was a little incoherent at parts.

Overall, it's pretty impressive for a first attempt, and I hope to see more from you in the future.

By the way, the introduction reminded me of Unrenewable and Picturesque. :P

Interesting. I'm impressed with your work, but I see much room for improvement as well.

The danger with allegory, in my opinion, is that it's hard to create a perfect metaphor that accurately encompasses whatever it is you're trying to turn into a story. As someone deeply familiar with the theological basis for the film, I found it a bit predictable and a bit ill-fitting at times. I also was struck by the fact that it would be very hard to understand the message/story if it were not for this familiarity.

The production aspects showed promising skill, but a need for development. The voice acting was inconsistent - some voices were done adequately, while others were a bit lacking. The visual elements of the film were enjoyable aside from a few particularly bad masking jobs.

The cinematography was probably the best feature here. The framing was nice and the lighting, while not always as subtle as it should be, was fairly polished. The animation was mostly decent, though there were too many rough patches.

So, to recap, despite the somewhat prevalent flaws, I thought there was a lot of promise in the skills you've displayed. Keep working at it - I'm interested to see what you'll produce in the future.
...Too many brickfilms are just meaningless...

Ehm...I do not slightly think you're right in that one.
...did not (even?) slightly...
I think he's correct.
(BTW Kinz, who is "he" supposed to be?
If the animator had fun making a brickfilm, it had some point.
Even if it is pointless to anyone else.
I didn't say pointless, I said meaningless.

But maybe I should explain what I meant by that.
I meant that many brickfilms do not have a lesson or message. They are usually just silly, short films that are made for a few laughs, and then you forget about them. And though that isn't really a bad thing, it is nice to see a film with a moral truth contained in it. That, and as a Christian I see way to few films that have anything to do with the Bible.

Now don't get me wrong here, I do enjoy films that are funny and entertaining, (Who doesn't like Zombie: Genesis?) But like I said before:
I really liked the Biblical undertone, too many brickfilms are just meaningless, but this had a lesson to teach.
So, did I clear up some things, or is it still about as clear as mud? :P
