It depends on the camera. If you have enough megapixels you can zoom in on the shot and it will still look great. I use an 18-55mm lens on a canon SLR and I don't have any problems. Unless you really want another lens, you can probably get away with the standard lens. And deffinitly go with canon, you will get more megapixels for less money. Also, after doing some research into macro filters, It sounds like they work great for legos (which don't move on their own) and you can get decent ones for a super cheap price. (like 4 for 15 bucks).

Well, with that canon, you can lose quite some quality and stll be full-HD.

Alright, thanks! I think I'll see how the 18-55mm suits me and then if I need it I'll do that. Thanks again!

Are you looking to use this camera only for animation? If so I suggest a different lens. I have a Canon 550D. I use it for live action filming, photography and animation. It's great for all of those however the standard 18-55mm lens can be a bit limiting for animation. You can only get so close to a minifig before it blurs and you need a macro filter.

Here is a brickfilm I made with an 18-55 lens. Coffee With The General Take note of the shot at 1:00. That is as close to a close up you can get and that's a midshot. Now it's possible to digitally resize it but that can degrade quality.

I'm not a genius on lenses so I'm learning as I go but I happen to know what Mobile used on Egyptian Holiday, he used a Nikon 50mm 1.8 and a 28mm 2.8 with macro filters.

This will be of interest for you http://www.stopmotionpro.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=84%3Adslr-lenses&catid=12&Itemid=35 it has information on lenses.

Also check out this thread http://www.bricksinmotion.com/forums/topic/8664/animating-with-a-dslr/ Hope this helps.

I am looking into getting a Digital SLR, and it looks like most of them come with a 18-55mm Lens. Would that be good for Brickfilming? Or should I look for a different one. In other words, would that be good for close up shots?
