Usually, I'm excited to start on a good brickfilming idea and the quality of the sets I build for it usually reflect that. If I'm just not that into making the idea happen, I'll scrap it and think up another.

Well, take this idea and visualize in your mind the community's reaction. Suppose your animation is stellar, your voice actors are fantastic, the sounds are phenomenal, and the technical side it 100% perfect. Is the community going to be happy with the story side? Or are you aiming to make a par film and aiming for the recommended status? Aim high, and you will probably be congratulated more than you would with an average film. Work at this film. Listen to other movie soundtracks and try to visualize them in your story. Remember, that is the current fit many members are ranting now. Unoriginal and poor stories. If you think the story isn't good enough, you're creative, fix it. If you're truly a film maker, you can wow people.

Well you can sort of test it by doing this or at the least test to see if your story has any holes. First test your characters using the 8 elements of character found here: http://msansbach.edublogs.org/the-study-of-english/8-elements-of-character/
Then use the 5 parts of plot structure:
1.Introduction
2.Rising Action
3. Climax
4.Falling Action
5. Resolution
If you feel that you hit all of these things relatively well you probably have a decent story. Hope that helps.

If I think the film idea that I have is good enough, I'll write a script for it and show it to other brickfilmers on skype. If they think it's a good idea I'll usually go and make it into a film.

Well, looks like you guys have more of a motivation problem than anything else.

How do you know if an idea is good? You don't, not until you've spent weeks or months developing it and you, your friends, your most trusted critics and your dog are telling you that it's not working, and even then there may just be one little change you could make that fixes the whole thing.

My advice? Read books on how to write stories, dialog, characters, etc. Then go find out if a story is good instead of waiting around for someone to tell you it is.
Yeah, that's happened to me lots of times. :D It's best if you get a start on it fast, because sometimes if you take a few days to start, you over-think it and get bored with it. It happens to me a lot, too. :)
I agree.
When you have something on your mind put it quickly on paper.
In the following weeks or months you can easy work out the screenplay.

You always must know how your story will end.
It takes some time of practice to judge your own story.

Best way to start is to have your story read by people who have the knowledge, experience and good taste to judge. AND give you an honest opinion and critics on how to improve your skills.
