Hi all, I’ve been wanting to start making my animations look more professional and I’m struggling with lighting. Is there a commonly agreed upon piece of lighting equipment that pros use.

At the moment I'm looking at my local retailer but any ideas/suggestions would be really helpful :)

Polarizers in Brickfilming?

I recently had some issues with the reflectiveness of lego bricks, and got the idea of using polarizers to reduce non-wanted reflections.

Here is an image to show the effect of a polarizer:
[img=PunBB bbcode test]https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0932/8664/files/Retro-Top_Tips_Photography_Classic_Car_Polorizing_Filter1024x666.jpg?v=1555006421[/img]

Has anyone already tried this out, if you have polarizers can you test how it affects the reflections on plastic bricks?
Thinking about buying some but obv I don't want to throw money out of the window if somebody already tested it and it didn't work.

Greetings,

Camino

I currently use an iPhone 13 Pro connected to Stop Motion Studio Pro for my brickfilms. I can get crisp shallow focus but so far I haven’t found a way to get a greater depth of field.

This has resulted in the background and even nearby figures looking quite blurry even if they’re only a few studs further away from the camera than the figure in focus.

This is fine for close ups, but on wide shots I want deeper focus to showcase more of the action and the set. Can this be achieved with an iPhone, or do I need a DSLR?

I've been trying to animate a brickfilm on Dragonframe, but every time I try to change the shutter speed, whether it be in the program or on the camera directly, it will always end up capturing a frame at 1/30 shutter speed. I use a Nikon d5300. I learned that this issue is caused by having the setting "manual movie mode" turned on, and that it can be fixed by turning it off. However, when I go to turn it off, the setting is reenabled as soon as I have my camera connected to Dragonframe. I have been looking for a possible solution, but I have not found much. I was wondering if anyone here knows how to fix this?

Question : from 15 fps capture to 24/25 fps youtube upload ???

Hello everyone. I am new to stop motion animation. While practicing, reading guides, tips, etc.
I have a practical question that I can't find the answer to.
People say, that 15 fps is a gold standart for brick animation, but all lego movies on youtube is 24/25 fps.
I use Boats Animator for capture and Davinci for Editing and rendering. Firstly, I used to export files from Boats Animator like photo sequence and import it in Davinci.
And I meet a problem, that Davinci has 3 closest timeline mods to 15 fps, its 16,18 and 24 fps. Ok, lets try 16 fps. But editing in that mode, latter doesnt let me render final video at 24 fps, only 16 fps. With 18 fps mode the same problem.

Ok, if I need 24 fps output, I work in davinci with 24 fps timeline from the begining, but in this case my 1 sec fragment photo sequence from Boats Animator containing 15 photoes doesnt takes 1 sec fragment in Davinci, because 1 sec for Davinci is 24 photos.
Ok, I can duplicate photos from Boats Animator and capture 12 fps, *2 it is 24 doubled photos in sequence in davinci.
In this case i'm evading the gold standard of 15 fps :(

Then I tried to export files from Boats Animator like video. Ok, Boats Animator made output video file with 15 fps.
Video contains 15 frames for every 1 sec ok.
I import it to Davinci on 24 fps timeline, and at first everything seems fine, 1 sec video from Boats Animator takes the same 1 sec on Davinci timeline.
But, when I studied the video in davinci in detail, i found that davinci duplicates random frames to stretch 15fps video file to 24fps timeline.

I have a question. How do you turn your 15 fps draft files into 24 fps on youtube.
Or it is normall in general for perception and "animation industry" that Davinci doubled random frames?

Linux stop motion with a Webcam

Hello! I recently have been working hard to find a way that works to use a webcam (in my case the Logitech C920) on a device with Linux. Here is what I have found, the majority copied from my thread on brickfilms.com, but I wished to post it here to, to hopefully help more people :)

Before a couple of days ago, for all my recent brickfilms I have used a Panasonic camera (Lumix DMC-TZ70). This is a good compact camera which is easy to use and understand. You are able to put all settings on manual and adjust to your desire. This is a wonderful camera for this purpose.
I use the Panasonic Image app to take photos with, in order to not touch the actual camera. This works over wifi and has a strong connection.

The downsides of this camera is that it doesn't work with any stop motion apps I know of (dragonframe for instance). Therefore while animating you can not use onion skinning or instant playback. You can also not flick through the past frames easily.

[b]Logitech C920 webcam[/b]

Therefore I decided to buy the Logitech C920 webcam for longer scenes that required the webcam's abilities. This is a great, small camera which many animators use. It has 1080p quality and connects with many stop motion softwares, such as dragonframe and boats animator. Some people may know that edBound uses this webcam.

The downside is that the official Logitech webcam control software does not run on Linux, meaning I am unable to use it. The webcam also does not have a focus ring on the outside either.

On an old Windows XP laptop I then installed Ubuntu. You can do this by creating a bootable USB stick on Ubuntu ([url]https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu#1-overview[/url]) or on Windows ([url]https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows#1-overview[/url]). They are not the only ways, but two easy ways.

The newest version of Ubuntu works well on the laptop. When you try and download software you may come across messages telling you it is incompatible, not available or other issues. To resolve this make sure your Ubuntu is up to date, then these problems should be resolved. This does not appear to have made the laptop slower.

After that I installed boats animator ([url]https://www.charlielee.uk/boats-animator/[/url]) this is a great open source program which enables live viewing, live playback, onion skinning and other features. It works only with webcams at the time being.

The downside to this is the fact that you have no way of controlling the webcam through boats animator, so the webcam can not be zoomed in, settings made manual or changed, and is constantly refocusing (often not on what you are trying to animate :nope: ).

To control the webcam I installed guvcview ([url]https://guvcview.sourceforge.net/[/url]) another great, free piece of software. I found this through a thread on Bricks in Motion ([url]https://bricksinmotion.com/forums/topic/24637/c920-linux-dragonframe/[/url]). This works really well and gives a huge amount of control over the webcam, including the ability to change focus, zoom, all the other more complicated settings, and a few silly effects :P

Then I encountered another problem........ you are unable to use the webcam in guvcview and boats animator at the same time (this go's for all the other webcam apps I tried too). This I did some research into and found that there are certain webcam apps, that allow 'splitting', where you are able to use one webcam in multiple apps simultaneously. Unfortunately there seem to be many of these apps for windows and mac, but I have only found one which works with Ubuntu, called WebcamStudio ([url]https://askubuntu.com/questions/106426/is-there-any-cam-splitter-for-ubuntu[/url]). However this does not work in Ubuntu anymore (it seems it must have) and is not in the software finder either

[b][u]Dragonframe[/u][/b]

I have tried the free trial for dragonframe, and it works well with the C920, allowing all the manual settings and being not too hard to use. This I would see as a last option due to it's huge price tag (stretching to the moon and back), however the combination of the features of boats animator and guvcview is very good. However if I find a way, boats animator would beat dragonframe in simplicity while maintaing it's features to a high level. Guvciew also in my opinion would beat dragonframe in easy to adjust settings, and possibly even more control that dragonframe.

Where to look:[/b]

I recommend checking out the Bricks in Motion forums ([url]https://bricksinmotion.com/forums/[/url]) as they contain extensive questions and answers for the Logitech C920 and different software.

I also recommend askubuntu ([url]https://askubuntu.com/[/url]), as almost every question I have wanted answered has been asked and answered there (although some answers don't work/ aren't useful, it is super informative and an amazing place).

[b]Boats Animator ([url]https://www.charlielee.uk/boats-animator/[/url])
Guvcview ([url]https://guvcview.sourceforge.net/[/url])[/b]

[b][u]The official Logitech Software[/u][/b]

I have tried using the Logitech Camera Settings software on Windows 10. It does not give as many, or as good controls over the webcam when compared to guvcview. The Logitech Camera Settings does [i]not[/i] work however on Ubuntu.

[b][u]The (Free) Solution[/u][/b]

In guvcview, there are two parts to the window, the live video from the webcam, and the controls for it. When the live video part is removed, boats animator would then be able to use the live feed itself, and so both would work in harmony.

When you open the terminal in ubuntu (Ctrl Alt T), with guvcview installed, type the command:

[code]guvcview --control_panel
[/code]
This then opens only the control part of guvcview. This then means that when you open boats animator it picks up the live view.

[b][u]End[/u][/b]

Then, by changing the settings in the guvcview control panel, you can watch them change the live view screen in boats animator. This solves the problem!

Credit of the command and help go's to pj.assis@gmail.com :)

Stop motion studio pro and Logitech hd pro c920

Please help me! My 13 year old son has made a few stop motion films and recently got the Logitech c920 for his birthday. He's very frustrated because he's trying to make another film but the camera will only focus on the background. On its own, the manual focus on the camera works really well, but when he's using it with stop motion studio pro, the manual focus option disappears. Is there anything he can do please?
Thank you so much

Stop Motion software with Nikon DSLR Support?

Hello all!

I've been a lurker on this forum for some time, and I have a question of my own. Is there a free software out there that is compatible with a Nikon DSLR?

I've read the BiM Free Sofware List, there are a few options that might work, but they only work with Canon DSLRs. DigicamControl is an option, but I'm looking for a program built for stop-motion.

I've tried using a DSLR as a webcam so stop motion programs recognize it (Following this guide: [url]https://bricksinmotion.com/forums/topic/22787/how-to-use-a-dslr-as-a-webcam-in-windows-for-free/)[/url] , but haven't had much success. The quality is usually poor, and I've had trouble getting consistent result.

I know there is Dragonframe, but I was looking for a less expensive (preferably free) alternative. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
