Brickfilm of the week; August 14-20, 2023: We have decided to try out highlighting a brickfilm release of the past week, chosen from among those posted on the BiM site or Discord. Primarily, the intention will be to highlight good quality narrative-based films with original stories.

To kick things off, the first brickfilm of the week is Lego Jewel Heist by RADvisuals; a well-directed heist brickfilm with Mission: Impossible influence, featuring wonderful lighting especially for the nighttime and dark scenes, which can be tricky to do well. Check it out! (Contains infrequent strong language and violence.)

The Brickfilm of the week for August 21-27, 2023 is Shayberger by Blandeer. Intrigue and twists to behold!

Brickfilm of the week for August 28 - September 3, 2023: Revelation by A Brick History! A Brick History has been producing some of the most exceptionally creative and original animation recently, and this is no exception!

Penta's picks for the top 5 brickfilms of each year

Happy September, to those who celebrate. I have decided to start up a series of YouTube Shorts ranking my picks for the top 5 brickfilms of each year, starting from 2001. Links to watch the films will be in the pinned comment on each Short. I was thinking that what I consider to be the essentials that surely everyone has seen are probably actually largely unknown by a couple of generations now, and so I thought YouTube Shorts might be a good medium to quickly talk about each one and potentially introduce them to some new people. If the picks seem obvious to you, that's the idea.

We have recently been a bit more overt in keeping Bricks in Motion positioned as primarily favouring brickfilming as filmmaking, so perhaps there is some value in giving people a quick window into the foundations the community has been built on over the years. As time goes on, the broad perception of what seems "good for its time" gets further away from what this part of the community considered exceptional in each year, and in some cases what hold up as all-time greats that still have the potential to influence brickfilmers to make more impactful films. I plan to release one of these Shorts every couple of days, and I will also post the blurbs here as I release them. To kick things off, still a year in which people were figuring things out, but here are my picks for the top 5 brickfilms of 2001:

Number 5: Legos Are Not Enough by 4 Guys, 1 Brain. The first of two lengthy James Bond brickfilms with a parody style that suits the old-school LEGO vibe.

At number 4 is LeGorSIKA by Joona Poikonen and Lauri Mäki. An offbeat action-comedy that is quite bizarre, and ambitious in its scenarios.

Number 3: I'm going to cheat here and include both Also thwacked Zarathustra and The Big Match by Thomas Foote. Released simultaneously, these films each feature amusing character animation and antics, including with the beloved classic LEGO monkeys.

At number 2: Monty Python and the Holy Grail in LEGO by Spite Your Face. Part recreation and part parody, this official brickfilm is one of the best known of the era, and still has a strong aesthetic and fun feel.

And at number 1, of course, is The Gauntlet by Jay Silver. A game-changer that helped pave the way for making brickfilms that actually felt like movies, The Gauntlet was a staple for years to come and remains an unassailable classic that can still be learned from today.

The LEGO Movie Rebuilt community project - Applications open

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0e3e6Z92Sbg

Animator/voice actor/musician application form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1_HliwsHUY65AJ0XZSJBADyexuw41JxYRrX8ukuGl3ME/viewform?edit_requested=true

We also made our own announcement video, if you like to hear the same information from multiple videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8pCwV1w5ns

This has been in the works for a while, originating from discussions in the Brickfilm Day Discord in 2022, then not really going anywhere for a bit, and then starting to go somewhere after that. BiM and Brickfilm Day staff have been involved in organizing, but a massive shoutout goes to Bricks & Pieces who did the bulk of the work of splitting the film up into individual video files and creating a massive organization spreadsheet with them, plus plenty of the other work. We have also been blown away by people bringing their A-game in contributions that have been shot so far, and we love to see people bringing their own creativity to their shots. Our intention is for this to be sort of a middleground between being a "recreation" and a "reimagining". People aren't expected to make the sets in the original scale, and we like for there to be additional jokes and fun things. The LEGO Movie really is great as something that everyone in brickfilming knows and is genuinely really good, and it's exciting to see people from different corners being brought together for this shared project!

Some more detailed history, for the record: The origin of the idea started when jaredvb lightheartedly posted in the Brickfilm Day Discord "Who wants to make a community recreation of American Psycho", on April 12, 2022. This led to people discussing the topic of recreating full movies in LEGO. Vertical Bricks asked "wait are there "the lego movie recreated in lego" videos?", and pinged me. I replied, "I've only ever seen brief bits - 1 minute or so - I have thought that the ultimate community project would be to reanimate the whole film to release it in 2024 for the 10-year anniversary - with the sets scaled down/done in peoples own styles, of course". This led to people saying they would be down to actually try that, and I proposed it would be "all LEGO stop-motion and then CG for the credits animation", due to that being the inverse of the original film. I went on to say "you wouldn't recreate the sets 1:1 - you would make your footage in your own distinct style". I also said that people would redo the audio, to keep in line with the reimagined style (and to avoid a copyright claim), and I posted Shrek Retold as reference for the kind of thing I was thinking of. People continued discussing and said it should be an official Brickfilm Day project, and I said "it would be good since the BFD people already have experience organizing projects to completion", before saying "actually I'm gonna say it should be a collab between BiM and BFD lmao". (Vertical Bricks soon stated "I ask penta a joke and people out here making a whole thing out of it lmao").

When BP arrived later, he said "I like the idea proposed by Penta. I shall confer with my fellow owners/admins. If it does go ahead, it will take a massive amount of organisation, so let’s remain patient and not get too ahead of ourselves yet." Later, he said "So, update: The Lego Movie Retold collab will be happening as a BFD event. It will be the biggest project we’ve ever undertaken, so don’t expect to see an official announcement or many other updates for at least a couple of months. Just know we are working on it, and we’ll detail how to get involved in time. Thanks for your enthusiasm". As is usually the case in brickfilming, it went on the backburner for a while, and sometimes people would ask in the server if it would still happen, and would be assured that it would eventually. Multiple staff members from both BFD and BiM were brought on board to help organize, and in 2023, things really started moving, and BP cut the film into many tiny video files to start offering segments to people. We started inviting people to claim footage and start working, and eventually slowed down on inviting more people once we had a fair bit going on. We figured we would open it up to public applications at some point, but wanted to give some time to have some work to show for ourselves first. Without a bunch of work already done and a remarkably solid-looking trailer, this could easily have come across like just another pipe dream that would obviously never go anywhere.

We figured it would be cool if the project came out on the 10-year anniversary of The LEGO Movie, but after a while that clearly wasn't going to happen, and the deadline for initial animators was pushed back multiple times. We decided we would release the trailer on the 10-year anniversary, and open it up for public applications at the same time. Now we just have to grind to make sure this comes out within 2024, since it is still the anniversary year, and we can still say it's for 10 years of The LEGO Movie.

The History of THAC: Brickfilming's annual 24-hour Animation Contest

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WExBuRWh648

Depending on the time zone you were in, the "finished" version of the Bricks in Motion website launched on either the 26th or 27th of December, 2008. The site existed in an unfinished state for a number of months beforehand, but it has now “officially” been around for 15 years, and still with numerous regulars who have been around since day 1 (well, regulars on Discord now rather than the site lol), and members from multiple subsequent generations of the community. You know I couldn't let this milestone pass without something major to mark it, and so I now present my latest History of Brickfilms video, which chronicles the history of THAC as well as touching on the evolution of the community and some general history of BiM, as this is probably the closest thing I will ever make to a BiM history video. This video includes appearances from RealBrick, Filip, Brian "B-Squared" Bridges, SlothPaladin, Max Butcher, AquaMorph, Steve Collins, LegoShark, dewfilms, Edbound, ForlornCreature, katwfisch (f.k.a. quakefilms), mrgraff, Sméagol, Darkman, Ladon, BertL, MindGame, Willow Tree, twickabrick, Tiny Angry Dog Studios (f.k.a. KG or Chuwawa), Mighty Wanderer, LOTW Studios, Jonni Peppers (f.k.a. Just Kidden), Fun Sucker, Daragh Twomey, Brickhead, Nathan Wells, Nosniborus, Chris Wynn, and Sonjira.

This project actually started life around this time last year, and initially the idea was that I would make a shorter and less meticulously edited history video for the Bricks in Motion YouTube channel (which is why I am doing the voiceover, rather than Blue Ghost like in my previous History of Brickfilms videos), to be released while the twentieth THAC was still in recent enough memory. However, I basically couldn't stop myself from editing it like my other History of Brickfilms videos and expanding the scope to the point that it became my biggest project yet. After a while, I decided that I should release it on my own channel in the established History of Brickfilms series, and we decided that we should wait to release it for the 15-year anniversary of BiM, which would also be good timing to help promote the next THAC, and so I wasn't really working on it for a while until recently. (There are more people I would have tried to get on the Skype group era group call, but that one was recorded when I still thought I could get the video done quickly, so it was very impromptu.)

This was a major labour of love, and I hope people feel that. I also hope that people will watch it in full (even if across multiple days) and that some might find it to be worth sharing. I feel like this one is pretty special, and it's nice to make a history video that actually has an eye for the past, present, and future, with a through line that makes the past feel not so disconnected and distant. I don't think I will ever top this one, but I did already write the script for the 2002 and 2003 history video before this, so maybe I will still make that eventually. Thank you everyone, and I hope you enjoy.

Following the success of Christmas Holidaze last year, we're happy to announce another festive winter community event this year!

[h]Bricks in Motion Holiday Potluck[/h]
https://countingdownto.com/?c=5163563
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8N5WqAuNC0

[h]Holiday what now?[/h]
We're keeping things fresh with a different format this year! Following the idea of a potluck, everyone will bring their own Brickfilm to the communal gathering and we'll watch them all together in a livestream on the 30th of December!

Submit your new winter holiday related brickfilm any time before the deadline and we'll add it to the playlist. Feel free to make it public as soon as you submit- we'll build our way up to the grand finale!

[h]Raffle Prizes[/h]
At the end of the livestream, we'll spin the wheel of fortune and pick 3 lucky winners for some fabulous raffle prizes that we will reveal during the stream!

[h]Submission[/h]
Entries will be accepted up until Christmas Day, the 24th of December (23:59 / 11.59pm EST)

Please submit in the form of a public or unlisted YouTube video to submissionsbim@gmail.com with the email subject written in the following format:
Holiday Potluck Entry, [Your producer name], “[Title of your film]”
For example: Holiday Potluck Entry, 1x5brickstudio, “Rudolph's 101 Cooking Tips”

Alternatively, message the YouTube link to one of the BiM staff members on Discord!

[h]Rules[/h]
This is a wide open community event for all who wish to participate. If you're not banned from Bricks in Motion, you're eligible to enter!
•	Entries should use LEGO or similar building toys as primary elements.
•	No mature/explicit content is allowed. This includes, but is not limited to: excessive swearing, excessive violence, overt sexual content, and blatant drug references.
•	Total runtime must be a minimum of 1 minute and a maximum of 10.
•	Submitted films must be new films, created for this holiday season. If you want to submit a film you started on before Holiday Potluck was announced, that's fine, so long as it fits the winter holiday theme.
•	Films can be posted publicly whenever you like after the Holiday Potluck announcement. Remember to submit your entry to be included in the playlist and the raffle prize draw!
• Only one brickfilm can be submitted per director! If you're making multiple holiday themed brickfilms this year, bring your favorite to the Holiday Potluck!
•	Use of copyrighted music and characters from trademarked properties as source material are allowed, but originality is king. Try to stand out from the crowd with something refreshing and new!
• Videos must stand on their own and cannot just be advertisements for your channel or sequels/prequels that require additional context. Bring your best work to the potluck and I'm sure people will want to check out more!
• We'd love to see entries from people and cultures across the globe, but to keep things accessible, please provide English subtitles if understanding of another language is required to best enjoy your brickfilm!
•	There are no aspect ratio requirements, but be mindful that the stream will be in 16:9, so vertical video won't look its best to people viewing together.

[h]FAQ[/h]
Q: Can we collaborate with others to create an entry?
A: Yes! Collaboration is encouraged. However, we won't be able to divide up the prizes evenly for you, so you'll have to determine who receives the prizes in the case of a raffle draw. Entries may be submitted on the basis of one entry per director, so you can help with someone else's entry and still enter a film you've directed.

Q: Can we use some non-LEGO elements in building our sets and characters?
A: Yes! The intention of the rule is to put the focus of films made for the event on LEGO filmmaking, but other mediums are certainly allowed alongside. Think about what the contrast and use of different elements can help you accomplish narratively and visually.

Q: Are CG brickfilms accepted? / Does it have to be stop motion?
A: You can use any medium, so long as the primary elements clearly resemble LEGO pieces. This isn't an experimental contest, but we don't want to impose unnecessary limits on what qualifies as a brickfilm.

Q: Are we allowed to release different versions of our films at the same time as the version submitted to Holiday Potluck?
A: To keep in the spirit of the collaboration, no other version of your brickfilm should be made public until after the community livestream on the 26th December. After that, feel free to release any alternate version you like.

Q: What languages should we submit our brickfilms in?
A: The playlist will be primarily in English, but you can provide your entry in other languages with English subtitles if you prefer. Of course, no dialogue at all is also always an option!

Q: How fast and loose should I play with the content restriction rules?
A: This community event is intended to be enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds, especially as everyone's contributions will be shown side by side in the livestream. As such, this probably isn't the event to push the boundaries. While it is a restriction, there's still plenty you can achieve within it and we look forward to a diverse array of brickfilms that aren't just bound by one person's idea of Christmas or any other winter festivities. If you're concerned about the content of your brickfilm idea, just ask!

Q: Are there any 'mod elements' like in THAC or BRAWL?
A: Not this time around! Mod elements are used in short contests like THAC and BRAWL to ensure people animate only during the time provided. As this event isn't about a time restriction, there is no need for mod elements.

Any further questions, feel free to comment below, or message me on Bricks in Motion Discord. Let’s bring some fun to this holiday season. #HOLIDAYPOTLUCK

[h]Get to work and I hope to see some great videos![/h]

Since mid-2019 Bricks in Motion has been an officially Recognized LEGO Online Community (RLOC) through the LEGO Ambassador Network (LAN). This means that our community is in direct contact with the LEGO Group and hundreds of other LEGO communities around the globe!

This post is intended to share what LAN is and answer any general questions.

What is LAN?

The LEGO Ambassador Network is a department of the LEGO Group that officially recognizes certain LEGO User Groups, LEGO Online Communities and LEGO Fan Media outlets and provide these communities additional support. Each recognized LEGO community also has an Ambassador who has additional access to communicate directly with the AFOL Engagement Team and work with other community Ambassadors from around the world.[/*]
What is a LAN Ambassador?

An Ambassador acts as a spokesperson to represent their community on the LAN. Acting as a point of contact between Bricks in Motion and the LEGO Group, sharing relevant information both to and from the LAN. The Community Ambassador represents their individual Community and does not represent the LEGO Group.[/*]
What is a RLOC?

Recognized LEGO Online Communities are mainly present online and do most of their community activities via their online forums in which they drive discussions, collaborative building activities, competitions and everything else celebrating the LEGO Brand. [/*]
Rioforce did a great job networking and building up the reputation of Bricks in Motion on the LAN. As the new Ambassador I hope to continue this trend and develop our relationship further. Otherwise, there are no major changes and LEGO will continue to support our many events. (Such as THAC 2022 this weekend ;) )

Making a brickfilm with Ninjago Mechs (Brickfilm behind-the-scenes)

Hello good people of Bricks in Motion.

Recently I was shipped (hand picked by me) two LEGO sets for review and to make a film with: Zane’s Titan Mech and Kai’s Fire/Stone Mech. How well do they hold up for brickfilming?

First off, they both come with a good selection of figures.

Zane’s Titan Mech comes with 2 gnarly looking ghost dudes, a golden Jay, and the nindroid the myth the legend, Zane himself. Zane comes with a hood and his metallic “hair” piece, so you can switch between whichever you’d like. None of the other figures in the two sets came with hair, but I was able to use pieces from my own collection for shots where they weren’t wearing their hood.

Kai’s Mech really takes the cake in this department, including Kai, Cole, Nya, and 2 different goblin dudes with some really fancy armour. It also comes with like a butt ton of accessories.

Between the two sets, I wasn’t able to use all the figures and accessories it came with, which is a good thing! Lots of selection there.
But you probably don’t care about that. (Maybe you do idk). The real question is, can you animate the mechs themselves? The answer is… yes!

Zane’s Titan Mech really impressed me with it’s posability. For stability purposes, click joints are used to connect the arms and legs to the chassis, but the knees, elbows, wrists, and ankles can move freely. The walk cycle in the GIF above was actually done without the aid of any sort of rig. It balanced well enough that I was able to make this super swaggy walk cycle completely in-camera. The abundance of non-click joints let me ease in and out the steps nicely. Of course, if you wanted to attach it to a rig and make a more realistic walk cycle, I feel like the mech would also be quite well suited for that. The bottom of the feet have tire pieces to help keep it from sliding around.

What stuck out to me about it in particular was the way the knees bend. It uses an assembly like below to give it full posabilty, while retaining the ability to support it’s own weight. I’d really hate to have one of these on the back of my knee in real life, but for this mech, it’s really neat.

Only potential problem is this limiter on it’s foot. It makes ankle movement very limited. (As a limiter is keen to do.) I ended up leaving it there, but since it’s lego, you could always take it out to free up movement a bit. It does certainly help stability.

Now for Kai’s Fire and Stone Mech.

Not quite as much to unpack here as Zane’s Mech. Everywhere except for the ankle is click joints, and there is no movement in the knees unfortunately. This makes walk cycles somewhat awkward, but I circumvented this by shooting from the waist-up during walking scenes.

You can still make him do cool stuff with the swords and stuff, even if you can’t really ease at the ends of movements. Fast movements don’t look terrible with it tho. Really I’m being picky here because of how posable Zane’s mech was, this one is still perfectly competent. It also falls over less than Zane’s, which is nice.

Do the mechs look cool?

… yes

I’m partial to Zane’s mech again, it looks straight out of Gundam or some sort of anime like that. Kai’s mech is cool too, with it’s bold asymmetrical design and traditional, samurai-like appearance. I think they are both very neat looking, but you can judge for yourself from these pictures.

The two mechs on a custom set I re-used from a commissioned project.

Would I recommend these sets for brickfilming? Yes!
Zane’s Titan Mech is especially recommended if you intend on animating movements with the mech itself, as it’s very well suited towards that. You can do some stuff with Kai’s mech as well, and it comes with even more figures and accessories.

See for yourself how the sets look and move in my new brickfilm!

The Redstone Battle: LEGO Minecraft Dungeons Review

Ever since LEGO began releasing minifigure scale Minecraft sets in 2014, I’ve been a big fan. Beyond the fact that Minecraft is my favorite video game, I’ve always loved these sets for their energetic aesthetic and their focus on simple plates and bricks. When I was graciously given the opportunity to receive a set from the LEGO Ambassador Network, something from the Minecraft range was an easy choice.

“The Redstone Battle” has 504 pieces and is based off the Minecraft spin-off, Minecraft Dungeons. The set comes with a four-minifigure-and-one-pig dungeon party, ready to journey into the depths for whatever bizarre adventure awaits. Each of the minifigures have entirely exclusive prints for their torsos and heads, giving them a lot of personality and very well suiting them to fill out a brickfilm’s cast. It’s quite nice to see LEGO continuing the trend of diversifying the minifigure selection of Minecraft sets away from your average Alex and Steve – I especially like the mustache sported by the fine fellow in the center.

The dungeoneers are provided with a fine assortment of weapons with which to battle the Redstone Monstrosity, as well as a small staging area to prepare for their missions. Within this staging area, we’re given a crafting table, a cauldron, a map, a health potion, and, finally, a lone torch. The amount of tools and accessories this set provides really do make it an ideal Minecraft starter pack, and I’m happy to see these adventurers are well outfitted for the journey ahead of them.

The vast majority of the set is dedicated to the Redstone Monstrosity and smaller, less intimidating Redstone Golem. Both feature several points of articulation, but unfortunately are still pretty limited in pose potential. For a toy, they’re pretty great, but for animation, they’re a little lacking.

The Redstone Monstrosity especially suffers here, though one could make an argument that more posability would detract from its lumbering, brutish form. Both its arms and legs use classic ball joints, which provide plenty of support and allow poses to be held reliably. Its elbows use racket hinges, which significantly limit range of motion, but also hold their positions well. Unfortunately, the spikes on the Monstrosity’s shoulders prevent the arms from turning very far from the body. Its legs are even more problematic – Their short height and center-based point of connection leads to any attempt at walking appearing more like a waddle. On a more positive note, I absolutely love its head! The gaping jaw has so much personality and it’s easy to imagine a horrific roar coming from within.

The Redstone Golem is significantly simpler to work with. All the connections use Mixel joints, even the head, allowing for a huge range of motion and some surprisingly dynamic poses. The legs attach in a much more typical manner, making walking more natural. And also, it’s tiny fingers can kinda-sorta hold accessories, which I find very cute.

The simpler posablity and general charm of the Golem is the reason I chose it to be the focus of my upcoming brickfilm, aptly titled, well…. “THE GOLEM.” The film was originally intended to be released alongside this article but, unfortunately, lies as of yet unfinished. Keep an eye out though, as I hope to complete production sometime in the next couple months.

Overall, I really love this set! As I mentioned earlier, it’s a wonderful starter pack for anyone wanting to get into LEGO Minecraft or create some sort of Minecraft based brickfilm. The minifigure line up is exceptional, and the large figures are well designed and fun to mess around with, despite some flaws which make them a bit rough to animate with. The Redstone Battle is available on LEGO.com and wherever LEGO sets are sold.

Thanks for reading!

Bricks in Motion Staff Changes

Hello Bricks in Motion!

I am announcing today that I am stepping down from my position as Bricks in Motion head administrator. I will remain a moderator and our current LEGO Ambassador, being the point of communication between this community and the LEGO Group. This decision was not easy for me, and I want to reinforce once more that I truly love this community, and in the past seven and a half years, I have been actively working toward creating a better environment for both experienced brickfilmers and newcomers.

Through the updates of the Discord server, the re-skinning of the website, added features, a partnership with LEGO, multiple new contests, and a continuing relationship with our wonderful sponsors, as well as my efforts on the Brickfilms Wiki and other Discord community like The Plastic Films, I have only ever been thinking about how to grow and improve this community. My only regret is that I was not able to see it through to the completion of my vision, which would be a new website which would be a hub for all brickfilming.

However, as I am stepping down, I want to explain my reasoning. Some of you may be thinking "good riddance," and others may be sad to see me go. Whatever your stance is, I want you to know that I am not leaving because of the previous drama and conflict. I was fully prepared to ride it to the end, continuing my vision of Bricks in Motion whatever the cost.

But then I couldn't stop thinking about what was actually important to me. Brickfilming is important, community is important, molding teenagers and adults into awesome filmmakers who are not afraid to express their ideas through their films... that's important. But what's most important to me is my Faith. Some of the arguments of last week revolved around Christianity's place in leadership of a non-religious website. I, being a Christian, believe it does have a place. I was never out to hurt anyone with my words or actions. Bricks in Motion is, and always will be, committed to diversity and unity, being a welcoming community for all people, regardless of their opinions.

So I am stepping down. The staff and I have come to an agreement that will hopefully benefit the community. I'm sure one of our administrators will outline the new staff setup soon for all of you, so I won't go into it. I will say that the reason I am stepping down is to focus on my own life, my purpose, and my relationship with God. I could have held out and attempted a community reconstruction, but when evaluating how that fits into my overall life, I failed to find a place for it.

So I leave it to you. The community. Each individual is responsible for the reputation of Bricks in Motion, not a single staff member. Never let it be said that you aren't welcome here, because you have the power to affect a whole community with your words, actions, and brickfilms.

I want to leave you with a scripture verse. I know not everyone is a Christian, but I am, so this is important to me to share.
Jesus said,
"for I was hungry and you gave Me food;
I was thirsty and you gave Me drink;
I was a stranger and you took Me in;
I was naked and you clothed Me;
I was sick and you visited Me;
I was in prison and you came to Me.’

“Then the righteous will answer Him, saying,
‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You,
or thirsty and give You drink?
When did we see You a stranger and take You in,
or naked and clothe You?
Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’

And the King will answer and say to them,
‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’
(Mark 25:35-40)

That is the model for which I want to live my life. That's what I will continue to do on my YouTube channel and in real life. It's easy to live a comfortable life, ignoring the suffering around us and escaping into the internet, but that's not what I believe is my purpose. And I hope you too realize the power you have when you interact with others and with the brickfilms you create and through the interactions you have.

God bless you, I am praying for the community.

People often ask what a good set is to make a stop motion with, and I usually recommend the creator 3-in-1 line, so today we are going to be making a brickfilm using the beach house set, and a phone.

Sets like this are good because they have some neutral minfigures, and a good collection of bricks in natural colors and shapes, instead of the completely random stuff in the classic parts sets, or the specific bricks of sets themed after movies.

I’m going to be using the “Stop Motion Studio” app on my phone, since that is currently the best option for stop motion with a phone or tablet. We’ll start by building a phone bracket. I’m using LEGO, but you could also use cardboard, or a store bought phone holder. We want to set it up so that the camera lens is as close to the height of a minifigure’s head as possible for the best angle. I’ll use the volume button on earphones to take the pictures so I don’t have to touch the phone during a shot.

Next we’ll set up our animation area. I’ve used a piece of poster board for a background, and a few baseplates to animate on. I’m taping down the corners of the baseplates, as well as the camera mount to prevent set bumps. While you can certainly go ahead and animate with the set built according to the instructions, especially if you don’t have much experience building, I’m going to go ahead and build a unique set specifically for the film I’m making.

Once we’ve got our story and shots planned out we can start animating. Make your movements small, smooth, and consistent, and be careful not to bump anything. Also watch the position of your own body, and make sure that you aren’t making a shadow or reflecting light onto your set that could cause flicker.

Once you are finished animating, you can edit your film right in stop motion studio, or export it to your video editing software for further work, then be sure to share the finished film on BricksInMotion.com and in the self promotion discord channel. You can check out my finished film here:

Over all I really like this set, Creator is a great theme and this is no exception, the included builds are great, the mini-figures are nice, the brick built animals are super charming, and there’s lots of useful parts to build your own stuff. Yes, placing every single one of those small white and tan tiles was absolutely worth it.

I’ve never animated with a LEGO Architecture set before, much less such a massive one, so when Bricks in Motion asked me to take a look at 21056 Taj Mahal and make a brickfilm with it, I took this as a challenge. Granted, animating this set itself would be difficult, as it is a static location that, by design, doesn’t move. It did not take long, fortunately, to realize that a film located at the famous monument was the most logical option.

Before I could animate, I spent a few hours building the set – all 2,022 pieces. It’s an enjoyable build with a variety of great pieces that could, if a brickfilmer wanted, be repurposed for other animations. There’s plenty of white ingot pieces that provide the base with unique texture, tons of ski poles for minifig use, candlestick pieces for ominous plastic rituals …

When the build is finished, the result is impressive – a good display piece for a home or office. The domes, columns, archways, and the tile floor stand out most distinctly, demonstrating some creative piece usage and attention to detail. It’s been pointed out by some that the columns are not exactly to scale with the rest of the model, but at least the distinct shapes make the model easily identifiable. Granted, if you forget the name, there’s a conveniently-placed 1x8 tile in front that should help.

Really, the only obstacle to using this set as a convincing backdrop for a brickfilm is the black border, which works perfectly for a display but can make it difficult to convince the audience that the set is a part of the film’s world. I resolved this issue by building my set over the border and around the actual structure, adding a pool and trees to mimic the actual monument. Since most of this was blocked by the balcony with my characters, intricate detailing was not really necessary.

(Pay no attention to the repurposed white ingots I stole from the back of the set to make the pool, don’t worry about it.)

The minifigure-scale characters presented another challenge as the set is a different scale altogether. I rectified this by placing the Taj Mahal far away enough from the minifigures to give the illusion of a far-off location, so its relatively small size would simply look like a far-away building. Microscale backdrops are not a new concept to brickfilming, but for the sake of giving a good technique the credit due, this Taj Mahal gets the job done quite nicely.

Considering that the Taj Mahal is a famous mausoleum and historical monument, it made sense to create an adventure-style film around this backdrop – and since I had just watched the Indiana Jones movies recently while rebuilding the old minifigures, a parody felt logical. I have a sort of nostalgia for these old sets, but while I had character interactions and a few visual gags all ready to go, the focus needed to remain on the Taj Mahal itself. Thus, I made sure the plot could keep returning to the monument in the dialogue and in several of the shots of the set itself. There were some ideas to add some easter eggs based on the old LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures game (anyone remember those parcel hunts?) but they felt out-of-place. The Taj Mahal was the star, and for the first time in his cinematic lifetime, Indy had to take second place.

The bottom-line question for these sorts of reviews is pretty straightforward: would I recommend this set? For a brickfilmer who wants a great-looking Taj Mahal set in their Taj-Mahal-centric film – absolutely! More generally, however, the price tag is a bit steep for most brickfilmers seeking a background prop, so I be more inclined to recommend this set to Architecture fans or those who have visited and admire the Taj Mahal’s architecture. The parts selection is quite vast, so if for some reason you need to borrow some of those glorious white ingots for another film, the option is available.

I’d dare argue that my assessment of 21056 Taj Mahal is par for the course with most Architecture sets – their usage is limited in terms of creating brickfilms, but when used well to really sell the audience on a specific location, they do have merit.

Now, a part of me does wish I had the time to turn Indy and Belloq’s standoff in a more interesting direction, but while that idea may never see the light of day, at least you can enjoy this nonsensical concept shot of my set …

Can Brickheadz be used in Brickfilming?

In 2016, LEGO released a little theme called “Brickheadz.” Small, buildable, blocky characters of everyone’s favorite pop-culture characters. You can usually find one of these little guys on any LEGO enthusiast’s desk, shelf, table, or maybe even as a king-kong-like monster stampeding through their LEGO city. With their adorable big eyes and humorous blocky demeanor, Brickheadz are easy to love. But...are they good for brickfilming?

I set out to find an answer to that very question...after I was commissioned the task of making a review brickfilm of LEGO set 40490. A set including three Brickheadz characters from the LEGO Ninjago TV series, namely, Golden Lloyd, Nya Samurai X, and Firstbourne Dragon.

I received the set and was charmed by the designs of the characters. They each have their own unique features and looks. I was especially intrigued by the design of the Firstbourne Dragon build. Probably one of the more complicated Brickheadz figures I've seen. It manages to give off the feeling of being a powerful beast while also having the typical Brickhead cuteness. Nya’s Samurai helmet has an awesome design that uses a lot of interesting pieces. And Golden Lloyd, while simple, still has distinct character and charm. I had a decent amount to work with. I started production on my Brickheadz brickfilm.

Before I started animating I decided to see if anyone else had tried animation with Brickheadz and it turns out, there are barely any brickfilms containing Brickhead animation (outside of the stop-motion build variety). I was on my own for this one. But animating Brickheadz can’t be that much different from animating minifigures...right? Wrong.

Brickheadz are completely different in design than minifigs and thus can’t do things that minifigures can. For example, a minifigure can bend its legs all the way forward and all the way backward. A Brickhead can’t do that. While arm movement and leg movement can be achieved with sticky tack, the flexibility of a Brickhead is far more limited.

They’re not really meant to be animated.

During production, I found that lighting set-ups, as well as animation, took a lot longer than I was expecting. About three times the size of a minifigure and a lot heavier, they become a lot harder to maneuver. And I found multiple times that they’re very easy to bump...off the animation table and onto the floor where they shatter into a million pieces. Ouch.

However, there are some things a Brickhead can do that a minifigure can’t. For example, moving eyebrows. In my film, I used sticky tack to attach 1x2 tile plates to my figure’s faces to represent eyebrows, and thus it became very easy to have emotive facial expressions with my characters. Fun! I was also able to achieve blinking by replacing the piece holding their eyes. Both these things are very hard to do on minifigures.

So are Brickheadz good for brickfilming? Kinda. Though the production process would have been a lot easier with minifigures, I feel like the Brickheadz builds have enough movability and inherent personality to be well animated. I believe I'll be returning to traditional minifigure animation after this project, but if you want to play around with animating Brickheadz...go for it!

LEGO NINJAGO: Jungle Adventures (Review)

The LEGO Ambassador Network has asked me to take a look at the LEGO NINJAGO Spring 2020 sets, which release March 1. So, being a Bricks in Motion member, I thought, what better way to review a LEGO set than to make it into a brickfilm! After all, the best way to really test a LEGO set is to animate with it. What, don't you do the same with every new set you get?
LEGO 71740 Jay's Electro Mech
This week's set review is LEGO 71740 Jay's Electro Mech. Even though this set is part of the NINJAGO Legacy line, and is from the Ninjago season when the ninja are on Chen's island, I thought it was a perfect start to a series of Jungle themed animations. So, introducing, Part 1 of what I'm calling the LEGO NINJAGO Jungle Adventures Series.

Check it out here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgtsFJ5S95E

You might be confused, even perplexed about the style of this video. Well, if you have never played an old fashioned point and click game, this might be new to you. *puts on old man voice* Back in my day.... computer games didn't have fancy graphics, so they were limited to mostly still backgrounds, videos, and clicking. Obviously, I didn't have to replicate such a style, but I felt like its retro charm would be perfect for showcasing the new NINJAGO sets' functions.

If you're interested in a Behind the Scenes look at the production of part one and a more in-depth look at the set featured in this brickfilm, check out this quick video: https://youtu.be/RIWgJYDkAMw

What are your thoughts on this set? Personally, I found it a bit difficult to animate with, due to its 4+ nature, which means it didnt have many parts or tight joints on the mech. And what did you think about the video? I'll be making more, so your feedback is valuable.

Come back soon for more parts of this series!

LEGO VIDIYO: Is is useful in brickfilming?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b-gIyOKm40

LEGO set Bricks in Motion a few LEGO VIDIYO sets to review. We're a brickfilming website, and LEGO VIDIYO is an app where you can make music videos with 3D animated dancing minifigs. Seems similar enough, right?

Sure, I can see the crossover between the audience of people reading this and people who would use the app. But that didn't make reviewing these any easier.

The products are great. I like the minifigs, and I love the tiles that it comes with. You know I'll be decorating my brickfilm sets with those tiles from here on out. Printed tiles is a blessing.

The problem is that I couldn't figure out how to relate LEGO VIDIYO, the augmented reality music app, to brickfilming. I could have easily just have made the digital minifigures dance on a set I built, but that's not my style.

Introducing: the video I made using both the LEGO VIDIYO sets and app.

Watch here: https://bricksinmotion.com/forums/topic/28137/all-is-well-in-the-forest-of-our-lives

Now, now, before you say it's weird... I know! It was intentional hehe....

But I decided to use the challenge of the augmented reality in a stop-motion animation brickfilm. So I did. And the minifigs found their use too.

So if you haven't already, check out the videos above for a more in-depth review and look at the LEGO VIDIYO products.
