Good live-action movies I've seen this year:

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Limitless

The winner will be something released on the last day of the year. I am willing to bet money on it...

I dont think Cars 2 will get a nomination (well, that's what I'm hoping). Rango will probably get a nomination - but whether it wins or not is entirely up to if the Academy likes all the movie references (which is the only real humour; although its good humour...) I have not seen Winne the Pooh (which I had not heard of until seeing this thread. Seriously, I have not seen a single poster/trailer/review about it - and I usually follow upcoming films very closely) but since apparently its traditional animation, I think it'll get a nomination.

One movie I have slated for several nominations is The Tree of Life. Whilst I thought by the end it became a bit of a chore to sit through, and I feel that the 'Beginning of Life' sequence could have been trimmed by ten minutes (there is a really powerful opera section where opera is playing whilst the galaxy is formed. It a brilliant marriage of sound a visuals - but then the opera just stops and the galaxy just keeps forming in silence. Its as though they ran out of music...) - it is deserving of nominations. Its the first US Cannes winner since Pulp Fiction, and since the latter got a ton of nominations then I think this movie will count. I'm pretty sure the Academy will recognise the outstanding visual effects if nothing else.

As for Super 8 - I really liked it (apart from the ending - which left far to many threads untied), but I dont think its Oscar material.

I guess you might already know this, but it's based on the number of animated films that come out during the year. The cutoff for 5 nominees is 16 films I think.

Anyway, I'd agree with the nominees others have mentioned. I can't help but wonder if The Adventures of Tintin might have a shot, though. I have faith in Spielberg.
I'm sure Cars 2 will. When was the last time Pixar lost an Oscar?
2006, when Cars lost to Happy Feet (somehow).

Animated Feature is a weird category because it seems like it switches between 3 and 5 nominees on a year-to-year basis. That makes it a really difficult category to accurately predict. If I had to choose the nominees from the pool of animated films this year, it'd probably look like this:

-Rango
-Winnie the Pooh
-Kung-Fu Panda 2

ALTERNATES:
-Cars 2
-Rio

It's a tough call, though. The Academy hasn't been afraid to show goodwill to Pixar over the last few years, but Cars 2 marks their first "flop," so it'll be interesting to see how the voters react to that. Rango and Winnie the Pooh are probably safe bets; it's that third slot that'll be the chopping block for other potential nominees, which, in the end, I think comes down to a race between Cars and KFP.

Yeah, I know it's waaaay too early for the Oscar season.
But looking over the animated films released in 2011 got me thinking about how interesting the nominee list will look.
So far I'm thinking the list might look something like this...
-Rango
-Kung Fu Panda 2
-Cars 2
-Winnie the Pooh

It will be a total shock to me if Rio gets an Oscar nod.
Even though the film deserves it from the artistic standing (not for plot).
Although I'm cheering for the underdog Winnie the Pooh to win (and to give the higher ups at Disney a reason to keep 2D alive). I have to admit, I'll laugh my butt off if Cars 2 wins for 'Best Animated Feature.'
