Usually, creepy music and a smoke-ish/misty atmosphere are big contributers in making a town look creepy. Oh, and lighting. Have some of it, but create a lot of dark spots.

I'm making a destroyed, dead town, with broken houses and spooky things. In the background there's the silhouettes of building, made with black bricks. I have two black pillar bricks placed beside eachother, and I need to make smoke come out of them. Is there any way to do this without too much FX knowledge?
I also need tips for the creepy set (positions of dead bodies, objects, how the houses are broken, etc.)
Thanks.
