There looks to be some misinformation in this thread. How I upload HD video on YouTube:

First, I use VirtualDub to format the video in 1280 x 720 resolution, adding bars to the top and bottom if the video is wider than 16:9, and bars on the sides if it's narrower. I also use the gamma adjuster to raise gamma a bit as YouTube's compression tends to darken the picture a bit. I then load the video into MPEG Streamclip and save it as a Quicktime file, compressed in high quality h.264 with mp4 AAC audio compression. Make sure the "interlaced" boxes are not checked, and that the FPS is over 24 fps. In my case I shoot at 15 fps, so changing it to 30 fps will automatically double the frame rate.

Once you upload the video, it takes a few minutes to process the normal-quality version, which will show up pretty quickly. The HD version, however, make take hours to be processed. So when the HD version doesn't show up right away, know that it is probably just still processing.

If you don't get useful help here, try checking on a very interesting site I just found. They might know how ;)

That won't add HD quality. at least not if you can't select it below the film in the first place

I've heard that your have to have a framerate of minimum 25 fps, and as you said 1600x900 or something pixels.
