We just used a bulb with light-sphere and glow enabled. Then we toyed around with the settings to get the light to the right size. What do you recommend we do that is better? We'd really like to know!
Scene Ambient could be turned down a bit (maybe to 5%).
What does "scene ambient" do?
In my experience, Light sphere is all you need because glow is generated after the rendering, so it doesn't matter how far the light is, the glow is the same size, which doesn't make sense if you're moving closer or away from a light and the size of the glow doesn't change. As for the light sphere, increase the realistic percentage.

The ambient is how the scene looks where there is no lights, i.e. shadows. If it's a well lit scene or in the daylight, you'd want to still see the colors and details of objects in shadow. If it's at night, you want dark shadows and you don't see as much details. In space, the nearest light source is a sun or distant stars, so the ambient isn't as bright.

In your case, it's the default of 20% white light. Click on Scene and go under Effects, you'll see the Ambient settings.
