This is quite an interesting development as remote shutter control is useful for animation.

I thought I should mention that Helium Frog software has a macro feature that enables the program to control other software whilst animating. With this software and Helium Frog it should be possible to capture images via the av cable and also trigger the shutter at the same time. I do this with my canon1000D as it has remote shutter software already, but its nice to see that this extends the feature to more affordable cameras.

hi folks,
I came across a thing called CHDK which stands for Canon Hack Development Kit. A programming community extended the firmware for Canon Powershot and Ixus cameras and added new features. This could be interesting for brickfilmers I thought and this is what I found out.

First, unfortunately not all cameras are supported. List of supported:

Especially interesting for brickfilmers are these features:
- script controlled camera operation, bracketing
- remote capture button over usb
- higher picture and live-video quality (Raw, adjustable bitrate)
- edge detection for use as onionskinning
- optical zoom and focus while video shooting
- battery display
- more indicators on display

CHDK is copied on the sd card and can be removed easily.
It works while the camera is in standard shooting mode, it can not be used when connected to the PC. Thus, the final images can not be transferred to the PC while shooting except maybe with a wlan SD card. I recommend to use AV cable to route the display to a television monitor or video-in card.

remote capture via usb means, the camera acts if it receives a 5V voltage over USB. It's not more or less than a trigger. But this should be a welcome present for those who otherwise have to touch the camera for shooting. In theory it should be possible to control more than just the trigger. I will see for that.

An easy to use and powerful feature is higher bitrate for videos and Raw capture.
Usually a sixteen second 1024x768 /15 or 640x480 /30 video has 26 Megabytes. With the maximum possible bitrate it's 80 MB, a noticable improvement in quality.
Raw are camera negatives which allow to change some parameters later on the PC such as white balance and you can get uncompressed pictures.

For me, the Canon RemoteCapture software is still the most convenient way to shoot, but for some occasions the CHDK may be really useful. The warranty does most likely not void since the program is only on the SD card and does not chance the camera itself.
