I could never figure out audio in VirtualDub.

After trying out every single software on the list (and then some) I too have come to the point that WMM is best suited for my purposes. It is simple, and the only downside is that it doesn't have multiple audio layers and that it crashes. But if you want to do special effects, I usually op for a combination of GIMP and Wax 2.0. Both these (also free) programs, have a steep learning curve, but once you actually learn the stuff, it's pretty easy to integrate it together. Of course the combination of these 3 programs are inferior to programs you pay for, but using these three programs (in my experience) work well.

I suppose you mean Pinnacle VideoSpin. I have to say I am using it, and I'm pretty content with it. It's a pretty solid program for compositing and stuff, it's not that complex and it can handle pretty good quality. The codecs are optional, and you won't have to buy them. As for me, I wouldn't need them anyway - the things of the free version are enough for me.

As for particular video editing, I'd propose VirtualDub which has pretty many features.

Hey, I use wmm too. It works fine, and I don't see whats wrong with it. Stop motion animation is a fairly simple process, so you really shouldn't need an expensive editor unless you want special effects like explosions and lasers. And I use audacity for audio editing. It all works great.
People who can't follow a fairly straightforward thread get on my nerves. Nobody was talking about pirating software until you mentioned it.
*blushes* Thanks. I needed that. This isn't an excuse, but my dad writes software for a living, so perhaps that's where my oversensitivity about piracy comes from. I see "Hey i want good software but i dont want to pay" and instantly assume the worst. My apologies for directing this thread somewhere it never should have gone.

Back on topic, WMM works fine (well... sort of) for the purpose it's designed for: cutting together home movies into appealing-looking presentations without a whole lot of work. For people who just want to take existing footage, maybe drop some music in the background, add some transitions and titles, and be done with it, it's perfect. But for filmmakers... especially brickfilmers, whose raw video doesn't have sound... its limited options leave it all but useless.

I haven't used it, so I have no idea if it's any good, but the screenshots for ZS4, linked to in the Free Software List, seem to indicate a competent editor whose GUI closely resembles that of higher-end editors like Final Cut and Premiere. It might be worth looking into, at the very least.

People who can't follow a fairly straightforward thread get on my nerves. Swag4567 asked about software, Duke Boy came along and talked a lot of nonsense. Nobody was talking about pirating software until you mentioned it.

For what it's worth, VirtualDub was the best free editing software available a few years ago. There may be better options now but I don't know of any. WMM always used to be rubbish. I can't imagine it's got any better recently.
