You don't need [i]any[/i] pieces to be a good animator. However, if you want good [i]set/character design[/i], it's always good to have a whole load of basic pieces, some stranger pieces for texture and greebles (AFOL term), and the completely odd pieces for awesome giant robots and stuff. Also, elaborating on what Hazzat said, it's always good to have some double-sided heads for comedic, or dramatic effect. If you have any problems with the other side of the head sticking out from under the hairpiece, you can always get a different head in there.]]></content>

I actually find them rather annoying. I hate it when you can see a double sided head's mouth sticking out from under a hairpiece. If I ever need to change a minifigure's head in order to show emotion, I just take off the head and put on a new one between frames.]]></content>
