Define insanely cheap. If it's less than $300 US, it's not After Effects. Beware of upgrade discs, improperly labeled tutorial books, and shady websites that will take your money and send you a cracked Celine Dion concert DVD. If you're lucky.

For a small sampling of what AE can do, check a few of these out. After Effects can do just about anything you want it to... and I do mean anything. The problem is it takes a lot of time and effort to learn the software and often a good dose of creativity to figure out how to get it to do what you want. That said, there's no shortage of internet tutorials to help you on your way. So if all you're looking for is some basic plug-and-play effects like smoke, fire, lightsabers, muzzle flares, etc., FXhome is probably the better option. But if you want software that can do all of the above and infinitely more, you'd be foolish to look at anything other than AE.

After effects is probably capable of any effect, however you would have to buy like seperate packs for it that contain muzzle flashes etc, or you could just create a muzzle flash using a solid.

As far as I'm aware, FX home has built in effects to be used like muzzles and sabres.
