The 640 x 480 may be a restriction of your camera. Sometimes live output is lower resolution than still capture. Check with canon and also run it through the software that it came with to see if you can get more. Be aware that sometimes they interpolate pixels to trick you into thinking the resolution is much higher. Try to find the ccd chip resolution from camera websites.

An alternative is to just use the 640 x 480 for animation timing (ie video assist) and at the same time take still frames with your camera. You can then string the stills together in the editor and get very high definition output. Most 'Serious' animators work this way. With this method it is easy to get cinema quality resolutions on the cheap. Some even use a video assist webcam through the eyepiece, just whilst animating, producing the final film from the stills.

By the way,if you have software that enables remote shutter control, try looking at the Helium Frog Macro documentation. There is a facility to take control of this software and trigger the shutter without touching the camera at the same time as capturing from the live feed.

If you only want to post your animations on youtube in HD. My suggestion would be QC 9000. It does 1600 x 1200 (which is beyond Youtube HD anyway) and also doesn't keep shutting down like most cameras and camcorders do. I have spent serious time trying to work around the limitations of various cameras, analog feeds, live view, DV feed etc. etc. and unless you buy the correct camera which you know will work you really are wasting valuable animating time. Time would be better spent selling a few things you have and getting a QC9000.

Thanks for the reply! I appreciate it! I actually just tried that very software yesterday, unfortunately I think it only lets you stream your camera with a maximum output res of 640x480, which is not acceptable in my standards. But, I'm not sure if this theory is 100% correct. If there is any other suggestions that you have, I would greatly appreciate them! Oh, and by the way, Helium Frog is a really great program! Thanks for all the hard work you have put into it! :)

For any camera if it is possible you need a directshow driver. For canon powershot cameras there is one, but it is $19.00. The attached software should allow you to stream from your camera to any directshow software (ie almost all windows software with video capability) including Helium Frog. Ive not used this software, but it says its directshow and also lists your camera.

I found this by googling powershot 640 directshow There is other software , so have a look through, there might be a free trial one so you can see if it works before buying. Reply here as to your progress.
