Cakewalk, a once fairly high-end DAW, is now being offered by BandLab for free. Previously the software (also called Sonar) was owned by Gibson. However, due to the company's bankruptcy, many of their assets were sold off. BandLab seems to have picked up the program, and is now offering it free of charge, provided you make a free account with them first.

I, myself, am pretty happy with Mixcraft, but downloaded Cakewalk anyway to utilize the included effects and instruments. However, for anyone looking to get into music, this is a fine opportunity.

This was done on short order (only had 4 days notice before deadline), but, quickly became one of my favorite projects to compose for. When Barrels Fly Original Score.

A re-release of Andrew Bermudez's (Mustache Maniacs') THAC 8 brickfilm for their 10th anniversary online, I opted to go with a banjo, woodwind, & snare heavy score to emphasize the main character's soldier background.

Also sprinkled throughout are a fairly liberal use of traditional classics (such as the National Anthem, Oh Suzannah, and Oh My Darling, Clementine), and even has a nod to John Williams' Jurassic Park theme!

Definitely a fun project to work on! BTW, here's the final film, if you're so inclined: When Barrels Fly.

Edit:

And here's the score for Shawarma Studios' Spirit of Adventure entry, "Colorblind." A World of Monochrome

Heavy Danny Elfman inspirations on this track. Especially in the 1989 Batman score!

Special Thanks to Funmi for uploading such a video for me! :)

For the score of Hollow Earth III, I wanted to take the music in a bit more of a John Carpenter direction, without going too Stranger Things. This being the final act of a trilogy, however, necessitated me to make sure that the new music fit with the other two scores (one of which wasn't even my own).

Overall, it was fun to revisit some themes and keep the overall tone and sound in line with Funmi's artistic direction, while still trying out some new things!

Enjoy :)

@Dyland: Nice piece. I think the instruments sounded clean; while you'll never get the sound of a real orchestra out of digital console, that set will certainly do in a pinch. You're right about the wind section being a little muddy, but overall I think it was fine.

Unfortunately, I was very busy at University this year, and wasn't able to do much scoring. So here's something cheap I slammed together yesterday...

I never thought that the default instruments in mixcraft (even with it's excellent convolution reverb) sounded quite natural enough. So, I downloaded some free vst orchestra packs, found an orchestra placement, panning, and reverb template sheet, and went to work.

This was the result: Military March

A sort of mash-up of John Williams' Indiana Jones themes combined with the eerie factor Danny Elfman so easily encompasses in his works. Aside from a bit of a muddy wind section, I think I like it!

Edit: Kinda sad to see that not many others have been posting music much this year... I used to love cycling through this thread reading everything everyone had contributed.

Although Game of Thrones type stories aren't exactly my cup of tea, I sort of like this piece. Too bad it wouldn't fit with any current brickfilms I've got planned.

Either way, have a listen. :)
