I wouldn't be as so harsh to never recommend WMM, but I will say that you should use it only as a last resort. The reason is that WMM compresses the video into a very small file, which is good for your hard drive but bad for the quality of your film, which will be drastically reduced. Some good editors are on the Free Software Thread, but here are some I would recommend:

Sony Vegas
Pinnacle Studio
Lightworks

I asked the same question some weeks ago. I'm a big Windows Movie Maker fan because of it's simplicity. Like yourself, mine all of a sudden stopped importing media files - which is obviously a problem.

I found an old version of Sony Vegas and it is the closest thing to WMM I can find with extra power. This means the learning curve for me is minimal.

I spent a whole evening downloading and trialing free non-linear software and I honestly wouldn't go near them. The time I waste on convoluted methods of doing simple edits well surpasses the money I would spend on Vegas. Vegas edit is $399 in my country. I'd use that for a number of years (not joking) so for me it works. You'd have to assess your own position of course.

Edit: Movie Studio 13 is $50 so that might be an option as well.

Hi,
I currently use Windows Live Movie Maker to edit my brick films, and it recently has begun to flake out. Can anyone recommend a good (preferably free) alternative?
Thanks!
