Yes, but with only a +1 reputation system, then there wont be any negative scores, only positive. Also, users can only vote once for each post.

No sure about the member base numbers, but I think that a similar rating system would work here too. I don't know, maybe it's just my opinion. I think those who complain about not having reputation points, are those who are newer. I actually think I was the deciding factor in the removal of it though. I think upvote/downvote is helpful for Reddit where it's actually sorting, prioritizing, and selectively hiding comments, but I'm not sure how much sense it could ever make on a traditional bulletin board structure like this forum.

People like me, whose opinion didn't carry a lot of weight, couldn't give any honest criticism of a film or idea. Every time someone posted helpful constructive criticism, the entire point this site exists, really, those comments got down voted because the younger members weren't mature enough to handle honest critique, it was disaster.

It was in mid-2011. It was a big fail (since BiM had a MUCH bigger audience than it does now), because most of the upvotes were given to the popular people. These upvotes/downvotes would give you a reputation (which was right under your "joined" thingie. Sorta like Reddit.
