I know exactly what you mean, and it bugs the guts out of me. :) The catapults firing with no one standing there gets on my nerves every time I watch it. That's partially my fault. I had 36 hours, but I'd never done a timed competition before, so I underestimated how long it would take me and rushed through the whole thing in 12 hours. Of course by then I was foolish enough to instantly upload and submit it before thinking that I should probably use the extra time to make changes.

In short, you're not the only one who noticed. :)

I'm quite impressed with the fact that you managed to make this in such a short timespan, especially because I know that I probably never could. And whilst the CGI was good, everything looked and felt rather empty. Whilst I understand that you can't do that much with limited time, it still looks strange to have massive plains with not a single hill or shrub, and a huge courtyard after an epic battle, and only three dead bodies, not to mention catapults that required teams of people to operate them and there's not a single person (or fig if you prefer) in sight. One thing I did really like however, was the map and the catapult designs.
So...yeah. I feel like there was something else I wanted to say, but I've forgotten it now...

It was definitely tricky to pick CG or stop-mo for each of the shots. I think some of the shots could have looked better in stop-motion instead of CG, but overall it worked out.

I'm not fond of mixing whole CG shots with animation, but I couldnt find anything wrong with any of the shots, and I dont think the CG shots could have been done better with animation.

No, I think Epic is a its a mixture out of
hard angles,
big heavens,
lighting,
Sets,
Cam-Pan,
Size (Forgeground with backround),
Movie-Colors,
Format (16:9),
Storyline,
Storytelling
and so on...

Anyway, if this is "your key", you made it well done!!!
Mario said it best, it has a real EPIC feel.
In my last two films I've been working on that a lot. I feel like most brickfilms have a small feel to them. Hastings is the first film that struck me as being "epic" because it always felt large, grand, etc. Part of it is just showing the sky a lot and not being afraid to do hard angles.
