They would be the same, but the cloth would be more resistant against catching fire, and you wouldn't have to waste so much paper. :)

You could always band a white sheet of cloth around it. :)

Personally, I use two LED lamps from IKEA and a normal desk lamp. I would HIGHLY recommend getting LED lamps but, It's nice having a variety of light for a "natural" feel. Here's a pictures of my lamps.

Well, I have a couple of these:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/your-zone-bright-on-LED-desk-lamp-cobalt/14977079
and they seem to work great (except mine are black, which isn't even listed as a color option on that page :/ ). They don't get very hot since they are LED, which is really nice. I have had them on for hours and still be able to touch the "bulb" area without much discomfort. The light is focused into a circle (between 2 and 3 feet wide at 2 feet away, I'd estimate), which means you may not be able to light some huge set with them very well, but within that circle, the light is very even which is a plus. Being LED, there is no light flicker either. The light is a nice white (maybe with a very very slight blue) color also. It isn't really related to the light that much, but the stand and crane thingy (that holds the light :) ), is very flexible when it comes to positioning. I can pretty much position them however I want. Really, I can't think of any cons...
