Personally, even though I watched 4 films in a row during winter break, I'm pretty clueless about most of these films. Actors/actresses I have no idea about.

Personally, Tin Tin should win animation, not because of it's [mediocre] story, but because of it's superb animation. War Horse should definitely win Best Cinematography, it had some awesome camera direction in there, but I don't really know much about the other films.

HP7P2 should have gotten much more nominations, though.

I dunno, watching it the second time Rango didn't improve. There were no jokes that I missed out the first time (I'm thinking of comedies such as Hot Fuzz and Airplane! where there are so many great jokes that every-time you watch it, it feels like your watching it for the first time again) and if you look at Rango as anything other than a comedy - then its not very good. Its basically Chicken Run if Chicken Run was parodying A Fistful of Dollars rather than The Great Escape - and Chicken Run is funnier than Rango because there was way more to it than movie references, and Chicken Run was released when the 'Guy pretending to be something he's not' cliché was only starting to get stale.

Honestly, I think 2011 has been a pretty bad year for (mainstream) animation. If Rango was released in 2010 when Toy Story 3 and How to Train Your Dragon was out - then it probably wouldn't have even got a nomination.

Thanks for posting this, Onion. :)

This really reminds me of how very few movies I've seen this year. :P Haha

I hope Rango wins Best Animated Film, it was my favorite out of all of the stuff I have seem this year, though, I am really rather disappointed it didn't get any sound nominations. While watching it, the sounds just really stood out to me, I thought they were fantastic! and I usually am not ever very impressed by sound while watching any movie, and rarely take note of it at all.

Oh well.
I do think Tintin has been snubbed from 'Best Animated'
It was motion capture though, I don't think it's technically considered an animated film. (Though it probably should have gotten at least a visual effects nomination)

Everyone needs to bear in mind that the average age of Academy Members is around 50ish (much older than the Golden Globe panel) - meaning edgier films such as Drive and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo are usually ignored. I do think Tintin has been snubbed from 'Best Animated' - although I'm just so overjoyed that Cars 2 has been missed off. I'm also happy Harry Potter has been mostly ignored; since I thought it was possibly the most overrated movie of the year aside from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - which is an absolute mess of a movie and only deserves a 'Best Actor' nomination.

I do fully agree that having only two best songs nominated is absolutely ridiculous. They could've have at least thrown in the song Madonna won a Golden Globe for - just to look as if they were trying...

I hope Midnight in Paris will win the Best Writing and Best Director, although it also has a chance for the Best Film. And I think the Visual Effects are going to be pretty interesting, because Harry Potter, Transformers 3 and Rise of the Planet of the Apes had all very good effects. If I'd have to choose though, it'd be probably Rise of the Planet of the Apes. And when speaking of that film, I can't believe Andy Serkis wasn't nominated.

How Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, a film that received mixed critical response at best and had little to no showing in any of the guild or precursor awards, walks away with a Best Picture nomination over The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (which had stronger critical and precursor award support) is absolutely unforgivable (also, where is Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross for Score?). Critics really are becoming more and more irrelevant in the eyes of the Academy, it seems.

Anyways, my complaints with this list outweigh my praises. Only two Best Song nominations just feels lazy and cheap, and they chose probably the third best song from The Muppets for the award (Life's a Happy Song not only should have been nominated, but should be the clear winner). If you're not even going to make a category competitive by dignifying it with at least three nominees, then there's no real point in having it, honestly. The lack of love for Drive is also upsetting, especially the notable snub for Albert Brooks in Supporting Actor.

That said, I'm pleasantly surprised to see Moneyball recognized in a lot more categories than I expected. The sound mixing nomination is particularly nice; I thought the film utilized its soundscape in a subtle but effective manner and I'm glad to see it wasn't forgotten in favor of other, more seemingly obvious choices. Also glad to see The Tree of Life recognized, I was afraid it would get overlooked based on its mostly-absent performance in the precursors.

At any rate, this is The Artist's to lose. If I had my way, Moneyball would be a much stronger contender for top prize, but The Artist is a good enough film that I can happily throw my support towards it.
