Are you trying to import compressed files? Lightworks can't handle compressed files.
Nope, completely uncompressed.
Then it's probably the lack of codecs, like Mason said.

Can Virtual Dub do that what I want to?

EDIT: I tested VLMC video editor and I'm almost sure that it can do that. It has many video layers, but I'm not sure yet. But Action Essentials 2's effects are already keyed, I guess. Am I right, and I think it can do it. You can try too, guys:

I find Lightworks a good software to use. I've had minimal problems:
1. Frustrating Layout. It's an entire new experience.
2. Memory Hog. If you don't have a lot of ram (I say a minimum of 2 GB, they say 8 GB is recommended)

Other than those problems, it is quite nice. It has an assortment of effects, and has multiple video/sound layers. But if you do not want it, or tried it and didn't like it, I recommend buying Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11.

Have you installed the Matrox VFW codecs?

If you want something other then wax, your going to have to fess up some cash. Sony Vegas Platinum 11 is good, and you can get it cheap (about $65) on Amazon. :D I use it and it works real well. :)
