EDIT: And I don't want any free trials.

FL Studio 10 if you're using a PC. You can download a free trial with a great deal of features. With it, you can add notes and create compositions in it.

Garageband if you're on a Mac. It comes pre-loaded with almost all Macs. It works similar to FL Studio and also allows you to use "Musical Typing" in which you can hit a key and it can add a note.

With both of these, you can import many sound fonts for much customization.
hew a quick question about Linux MultiMedia Studio
how many instruments does it have
all their examples seem to be Technion style
It is mainly for electronical music, but there are some orchestral type instruments. Though I have gathered before a bunch of orchestral .sf2 files, which are orchestral instruments that you can add to lmms. If I can find it, I'll try to post it in this thread, for others that want a great free program, with better sounds than it already has.

Mixcraft is the best music program I've tried. You can download the trial version, and read the tutorial Mason wrote to learn how to record music once the trial expires.

Another program I like is Finale Notepad. I think it was available for free a few years ago, though I'm not sure if you can get one of the old versions anymore.
