I joined the Shapeways Beta when it started because I read about it on Gizmodo. I didn't want to click this thread, but I ended up doing so. I thought that Shapeways would be a good idea for LEGO stuff, but I had no experience with 3D modeling, so I didn't have any idea where to start. But what this woody guy did seems really cool. I did a quick search, and he talked about his stuff here. Good find randomparrot! In response to your question, LMP, registering is free, as is publishing your models. Anyways, my favorite of these was the periwig. Really quite accurate and good looking. And this stuff is only a bit over a buck, to boot.

Shapeways basically they 3D print your 3D models out, fairly cheaply considering you could probably make custom Lego with it. They can get pretty small so I think Lego sized stuff is OK, although you do need a bit of modeling ability for it. Think: Your own brickarms, as custom as you like, armour, helmets, weapons, although I doubt you could make minifigs with it, as that requires moving parts.
