Something that really helps for putting minifigs back in the right spot on the board is having reference points. If you're animating on a blank board with no detail, it's really heard to put it back in the same place. So it's best if you have a set with random smaller plates of the color you wish. The little cracks in between the plates serve as excellent reference points usually and really help. It's also nice to have some good set detail, such as some object, plant or piece of furniture nearby so you can remember how far the minifig was from it. :)
On top of that, detailed sets look awesome!
In a video I made, 'Pirates Rule!' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agdCdl6NI6Y&feature=channel_video_title), Around the middle I had a fight scene inside of a ninja dojo, which has a really cool floor design which really helped for the sword duel in there.
For your punches and such, I suggest you just do a load of test, then render them on your computer, as your doing.
I hope that helped some. :)

Also, in his signature, Brickman has(had?) a line that read: "You need to read this." "This" was linked to a pdf with instructions on how to make a good fight scene. If it's not still in his signature, you can probably pm him about it. Hope this helps! ;)

How can I make a great fighting scene? I don't want it to look slow and boring, but not too fast either. How many frames should a single punch take? When running is involved, how do I keep the figure placed down while animating it. Lifting the minifig from the baseplate is confusing for me, because I seem to lose track of where it last was.
